Statistics Of Hair Loss In Girls

The statistics of hair loss in girls may vary depending on the cause but the basic hair loss stats due to hormonal reasons are about 95% of females are experiencing hair loss due to hormonal changes.

This number also includes women who are going through hormonal changes such as from post pregnancy hair loss and menopause hair loss.

Other female statistics show 25% of females have thinning hair loss.

29% of female girls experiencing hair loss are experiencing depression which may be the cause of the hair loss.

21 million women are suffering from a type of alopecia such as alopecia totalis, traction alopecia, and cicatricial alopecia.

40% of alopecia hair loss patients are female women.

80% of women experience noticeable hair loss by the age of 60 years young.

Causes Of Hair Loss In Girls

1.) Medications

Medication is a cause for hair loss in teenage girls such as from the medication Metoprolol.

Other types of medications young girls might be taking that may cause hair loss could be from acne medications, medications to treat ADHD and birth control pills. If your teen girl is taking any of these prescription medications or other types of medication drugs, this could very well be the cause for the hair loss that she is currently experiencing.

2.) Over Hair Styling

Over hair styling causes severe breakage and hair loss thinning at the roots, med shaft to ends of the hair shaft.

This is caused by getting chemical services done on your hair too often such as from perms, bleaching, or coloring the hair or by over processing the hair from using heated styling tools daily such as with a flat iron, curling iron or even hot rollers.

3.) Poor Nutrition

Over dieting and not eating the healthiest foods can cause hair loss.

Eating the wrong foods in your everyday diet can be what is causing your hair to thin and fall out.

4.) Stress

Stress can effect your immune system and can cause hair loss. Make sure that you are avoiding situations that can cause stress and anger.

5.) Trichotillomania

A habit of pulling the hair out yourself with force, doing this is a hair loss cause called trichotillomania but doing this will cause a form of traction alopecia hair loss.

6.) Hormones

Hormones can cause hair loss due to issues such as polycystic ovarian syndrome, lupus, and thyroid issues.

7.) Alopecia Areata

Teenage girls and young women can suffer from hair loss due to alopecia areata. Alopecia areata is actually quite common, statistics show that 1 in 50 people suffer from the condition at some point in their lives.

Even female celebrities such as Tyra Banks, Neve Campbell, and Viola Davis have actually spoke out about losing their hair due to alopecia areata.

8.) Anemia

Anemia is an iron deficiency. It is a common cause of hair loss for young women & teenage girls. Please ask your doctor to find out if you have a deficiency in iron and if you should take an iron supplement to help fight against your hair loss.

9.) Androgenic Hair Loss

Androgenic hair loss is where you will start to see female pattern hair loss  in your teen years. Androgenic hair loss will usually start to thin at the top center of the scalp area and then start thinning all over the scalp.

Androgenic hair loss is considered genetic, but the good news is that it's treatable for most females.

10.) Traction Alopecia

Traction alopecia is caused by having a constant strain of either pulling and or constant friction. Causes are such as the following:

  1. Too tight pony tails
  2. Tight pig tails
  3. Tight head gear, such as from hats, hijabs, helmets and headbands
  4. Hair extensions
  5. False eyelashes can cause traction alopecia on your lashes too (just FYI)
  6. Tight Braiding such as from cornrows
  7. Constant rubbing such as even from hip hop break dancing on your head {as that is constant rubbing from constant dance practice}
  8. Too tight wigs, it's best to try and get a fitted wig or customized wig
  9. Too tightly twisted dreadlocks
  10. Hair weaves attached with glue, tape, other adhesives or clips
  11. Hair accessories such as barrettes or hair clips worn tightly against the scalp daily

Treatment Remedies For Hair Loss In Girls

Talking to your doctor can better help the situation to see what the diagnoses is. Doing this will let you know how to assist the hair loss issues better.

2.) Eat Healthy

Eating a well balanced healthier diet with lots of fruits, vegetables, omega 3's and lean proteins will give you healthier hair growth and help stop hair fall in teenagers.

3.) Take a Vitamin For Hair Growth

Taking a hair growth supplement vitamin such as viviscal or biotin is known to help improve hair growth and stop hair loss and hair fall which in turn creates fuller, thicker, healthier hair growth in teen girls.
