Causes Of Teenage Hair Loss In Girls

1.) Medications

Medication is a cause for hair loss in teenage girls such as from the medication Metoprolol.

Other types of medications young girls might be taking that may cause hair loss could be from acne medications, medications to treat ADHD and birth control pills. If your teen girl is taking any of these prescription medications or other types of medication drugs, this could very well be the cause for the hair loss that she is currently experiencing.

2.) Over Hair Styling

Over hair styling causes severe breakage and hair loss thinning at the roots, med shaft to ends of the hair shaft.

This is caused by getting chemical services done on your hair too often such as from perms, bleaching, or coloring the hair or by over processing the hair from using heated styling tools daily such as with a flat iron, curling iron or even hot rollers.

3.) Poor Nutrition

Over dieting and not eating the healthiest foods can cause hair loss.

Eating the wrong foods in your everyday diet can be what is causing your hair to thin and fall out.

Stress can effect your immune system and can cause hair loss. Make sure that you are avoiding situations that can cause stress and anger.

5.) Trichotillomania

A habit of pulling the hair out yourself with force, doing this is a hair loss cause called trichotillomania but doing this will cause a form of traction alopecia hair loss.

6.) Hormones

7.) Alopecia Areata

Teenage girls and young women can suffer from hair loss due to alopecia areata. Alopecia areata is actually quite common, statistics show that 1 in 50 people suffer from the condition at some point in their lives.

8.) Anemia

Anemia is an iron deficiency. It is a common cause of hair loss for young women & teenage girls. Please ask your doctor to find out if you have a deficiency in iron and if you should take an iron supplement to help fight against your hair loss.

9.) Androgenic Hair Loss

Androgenic hair loss is where you will start to see female pattern hair loss  in your teen years. Androgenic hair loss will usually start to thin at the top center of the scalp area and then start thinning all over the scalp.

Androgenic hair loss is considered genetic, but the good news is that it's treatable for most females.

10.) Traction Alopecia

Traction alopecia is caused by having a constant strain of either pulling and or constant friction. Causes are such as the following:

  1. Too tight pony tails
  2. Tight pig tails
  3. Tight head gear, such as from hats, hijabs, helmets and headbands
  4. Hair extensions
  5. False eyelashes can cause traction alopecia on your lashes too (just FYI)
  6. Tight Braiding such as from cornrows
  7. Constant rubbing such as even from hip hop break dancing on your head {as that is constant rubbing from constant dance practice}
  8. Too tight wigs, it's best to try and get a fitted wig or customized wig
  9. Too tightly twisted dreadlocks
  10. Hair weaves attached with glue, tape, other adhesives or clips
  11. Hair accessories such as barrettes or hair clips worn tightly against the scalp daily
